New arrival and Lombok

We were delighted to hear from Tom and Nadine that Katinka Marie Syrett had been born on the 13th October at 4.10 in the morning. She weighed 4 kilograms and both mother and baby are well---and Tom and Yannick surviving! Our first granddaughter, and the greatgrandparents will be delighted to have a little girl.

Our tour guide and general mentor, Ali who has been so helpful and charming, took us on a tour of Lombok yesterday. We fed monkeys with peanuts in the mountains, then went to the oldest temple in Lombok where five religions were represented, it had bathing pools, holy eels, holy stones and some lovely old doors and carvings. From there we went to a pottery making village where the clay was found nearby, then had lunch in a roadside restaurant, not great but under £2 a head for rice, some chicken and spicy vegetables, then to an Ikat weaving village, the patterns are very intricate and woven on handlooms by women sitting up very straight with a back brace behind them. Then on to a batik village and a Sasak village (the oldest inhabitants of Lombok). Mosques and scooters were everywhere in various states of repair, we arrived back at the boat at 8pm exhausted but glad we have seen something of Lombok.
