After the school visit we were taken to a traditional Malay house to be served a traditional lunch.  This consisted of a round tray with servings for four people and was to be eaten using our fingers.  But, first we had to be given permission to enter the house.  This involved a lengthy play at the entrance where our wish to enter was justified by one man and questioned by another representing the owner of the house.  Although it was all in Indonesian, judging by the response of the crowd, it was quite clearly a very funny performance.

Trying to get the members of the fleet into one room at the same time and sat in groups of four is a bit like herding cats. The meal was excellent but rather spicy.  Chicken and fish were the main dishes together with the really tasty “Kangkung” or water spinach that they use a great deal.  Tea and cakes made from rice flour and coconut followed.
