It got colder and wetter so we let down the sun screens which gave us quite a lot of protection.

We were chugging for up to 14 hours a day because we were short of time so didn’t have much chance to take in the wildlife but we saw enough to tempt us back …….

The waterway is a mixture of rivers and sounds linked by canals so the landscape varies from closed in to wide open.  You can theoretically motorsail in the open areas where getting a sail up speeds you on your way.  We did this once, very briefly.  The rest of the time we had strong winds on the nose which not only held us back in their own right but they whipped up a strong sea against us.  Sometimes we were only travelling at 1mph.

The best fun we had in the Alligator River was the bridge which was vast and again, opened up just for us.

By this time we were up to jumpers, jackets and harnesses…….
