Capo Carbonara, Sardinia

We arrived here yesterday afternoon after a 54 hour crossing from Sicily.
To our delight we set off with a perfect wind and settled down for a great
sail across as the weather forecasts had indicated. Sadly it was not to
be. After a few hours the wind faded and it started to rain so engine on.
When there was a bit of wind it was on the nose which is no help at all
so we motored most of the way. It is still cold so we needed full
oilskins at night. The sea was fairly gentle though.

The greatest delight were the dolphins. They came time and time again.
Sometimes just for a minute or two, sometimes for twenty. One evening we
caught sight of some a long way off and then realised they were moving
very quickly in our direction. They seemed to be everywhere, all racing
towards us. We have already learnt that they like Abba and Tibetan
chanting, this time it was Simon and Garfunkle. They stayed and gave us a
terrific display of leaps and dives around the boat.

Then more at night; something Carol hadn’t seen before. There was a lot
of phosphorescence in the water so any movement made it glow and sparkle.
The dolphins scooting through the water leave a silver trace as they go
which is magical.

We now have a few weeks on our own and so will not move so much. We still
have a lot of work to do on the boat so we will bob about at anchor and
get on with that. The biggest challenge is likely to be putting the child
netting round the railings ready for Will and Annie’s arrival in July with
Josh, Dan and Isla.
