Many people, and the pilot guide, had told us that Foxy’s Bar on Jost Van dyke was the place to be for New Year’s Eve.  Having had such a splendidly isolated Christmas we decided that we had better man up and face the crowds in order to see this spectacle.

JVD is a very small island with a suitably picturesque Customs House at the end of the jetty where Myrtle the Customs Officer in very high heels and fancy hair made us most welcome.

There is no real road to Foxy’s just an extension of the beach packed down…..

But sadly Foxy’s itself proved a big disappointment.  Very ordinary but terrifically overpriced.  Still, that was lunchtime so we thought we should return for another go once the partying started.

By now the anchorage was getting very crowded……..

… but it gave us a great up close view of everyone getting ready to party.

We forced ourselves ashore again, reminding each other how often the party you didn’t want to go to turns out to be one of the best and lo and behold.………  it was awful.  No atmosphere in spite of the number of people, no focus, poor quality sound system paying not very exciting music an mass produced BBQ food that didn’t look particularly appetising.  They could learn a lot from the parties at Shirley Heights in Antigua.  We lasted, oh about twenty minutes.

Next day we walked over the headland to the other ‘must do’, the Soggy Dollar Bar.  Carol had first heard about this years ago when yachts would anchor in the bay, swim ashore for a Painkiller (Rum, coconut etc) and pay with dollars that were now wet and soggy.  It was awful.  We weren’t entirely surprised given that twenty years had passed since first hearing about it but it was worse than anything we had encountered in the Med in terms of crammed in very drunk people.  We lasted, oh, about two minutes.

Much better things to do such as get the hammock out for the first time this season and put up the new sun awning.  Carol lasted, oh, hours.
