Having once been a large leper colony Makongai is now host to a project to breed, protect and then re-distribute giant clams back to the reefs where they act as huge water filters thereby helping to sustain the health and life of the reefs overall.

The giant clams are seeded in tanks ashore and then once large enough placed on the sand in the shallow water of the bay.  You can still see the sack used to carry the one on the right.

They need protection though and a reef needs something to establish itself on so what better than re-cycling the old hospital beds held together by old scaffolding which the coral seems very happy to grow on.

The reef was gradually re-establishing itself with some glorious corals.
