On our way back from immigration we dropped by the volcano.  The most accessible volcano in the world and it was really something.  First the barren landscape of the quite side.  The ash underfoot had fine strands of glass and metal clearly visible.

Then round to the National Park gate to pay our entrance fee.  This was the very picturesque and very clean long drop loo at the bottom of the garden.  Like everything, immaculate…..

We posted our postcards…..

You are taken to the rim at sunset so get your first look (and feel – it is as hot as you would expect) in the last of the daylight.

By active volcano they mean very active volcano.  So active that there are walls of lava to hide behind if any of the ‘bombs’ seem to be heading your way!

As the sun goes down the explosions become more dramatic ……

The photographs don’t convey the full story of course there is heat, noise and the smell of sulphur to complete the picture.  You will have to imagine that, or go to Tanna.
