We were shown round the village which still has much to see of the former leper colony.  The colony was highly organised with separate villages  in different parts of the island and a central area with the doctors clinic, cinema, church and staff accommodation.  The steps to the main building are still intact.

The autoclave (pressure cooker) used to sterilise the patients mail before it was taken off the island.

An old oxygen bottle is used as the gong to call the workers to start their day.

 

 

Inevitably there is a large graveyard….

There is solar power for lighting on the island but the generator is needed to run fridges and washing machines.  Intermittently.
