On our second day in Bali we were taken up into the hills to visit a traditional rice farming village.  We drove steadily uphill for a couple of hours in a convoy of cars, through lush rice fields, despite this being the dry season.  The farmers manage their water within the paddy fields and get three harvests each year.  We were met by the village headman who also happens to own most of the land.  We were all taken to his house where we were given an amazing feast for lunch and entertained with music, dances and traditional comic acts.   All the local people involved were from the local 5 villages and most work for the headman in the fields.  They were also extremely skilled and well-rehearsed musicians and dancers.  The chef organising lunch was the headman’s brother who had been a head chef with Ramada hotels.
