The Maiden’s Castle near Silifke was quite a spectacular site and there is an old fairy tale attached to it, I have changed the story slightly so that it has a happy ending for the children !

Once upon a time there lived a King and Queen in a big Castle.

One day the King & Queen were blessed with a baby daughter, however their happiness was short lived when an old, wise man told them that their daughter would die from a poison snake bite when she was 16 years old.

Much disturbed by this news, the king set about building a new castle for the young princess. He ordered the castle to be built in the sea so that no snakes would ever be able to get to the castle.

The princess became very sad on her own in the big castle and so, one day, nearing her sixteenth birthday, the King allowed the Princess to have some friends to come and visit.

Her friends bought with them lots of presents including a big basket of fruit, but hiding in the fruit was a poisonous snake.

The snake escaped and bit the princess which sent her to sleep for a very long time until her prince came to rescue her.
