36:57.1n 21:40.3e When we left the Northern Ionian (fearing the many charters that are sailing during July & August) islands I felt a bit sad thinking that the Peloponnese would not be as amazing as these islands, yet I was wrong. After a beautiful sail from Zakynthos, we arrived in Katakolon on the Peloponnese - in itself the place is not particularly nice, yet it is a 40 minutes taxi drive from Olympia - which is well worth a visit! Indeed, as the place is a jumble of ruins overgrown by olive and maquis. This site hosted the ancient Panhellenic games for over a thousand years and many of the Greek heroes we read about proved their worth on track and field there! One of the amazing things about these ancient games was that a sacred truce, the Ekeiheiria, was observed for the duration of the games and warring states would put aside their differences to partake in the events, presumably though resuming hostilities after the games. Yesterday, we arrived in the the bay of Pylos (previously named Navarinou Bay - given that it held a very big naval fight in 1827) not before passing in front of amazing “falaises tombantes dans la mer" and had a very nice romantic dinner at “Elia” restaurant on the seafront of Gialova which has a couple of very charming boutiques as well as restaurants - all on a single street ! This morning Roberto decided we are to visit “La Grotte de Nestor” which - as per the mythologic legend : “C’est dans cette grotte haute de 20 m qu’Hermès aurait fait cacher les boeufs dérobés à Apollon”. I must admit very impressive cave winch offers a breathtaking view on a fabulous beach Vodoikilia. Even if we started relatively - 8am early, the heat was already present and we were happy to get back on our mini to KG and then on Knotty Girl for a swim. Later today, we plan on visiting Pylos. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
