When we left the Northern Ionian (fearing the many charters that are sailing during July & August) islands I felt a bit sad thinking that the Peloponnese would not be as amazing as these islands, yet I was wrong. After a beautiful sail from Zakynthos, we arrived in Katakolon on the Peloponnese - in itself the place is not particularly nice, yet it is a 40 minutes taxi drive from Olympia - which is well worth a visit! Indeed, as the place is a jumble of ruins overgrown by olive and maquis. This site hosted the ancient Panhellenic games for over a thousand years and many of the Greek heroes we read about proved their worth on track and field there! One of the amazing things about these ancient games was that a sacred truce, the Ekeiheiria, was observed for the duration of the games and warring states would put aside their differences to partake in the events, presumably though resuming hostilities after the games.
