Location: Bariloche (Argentina) (41:3.167S 71:31.84W)
We arrived as the sun faded over the mountains and the evening dropped over
this European like town situated on the side of the lake. We had left Puella
at 10 am the sun out on a 4 x 4 bus initially pulling to the Chile border
post to check out, we had to get the police up, I think we were the only
ones for the day. Then we started off up the valley on a dirt road, the
gravel road followed the river, winding in and out of the forest and along
the river. The bus has a high wheel base and it needed it, we had about 20
people on board and the boys sat at the front enjoying the view and action.
The maintains rose steep on each side and river rushed past in a light green
color form the minerals in the water.
After 30 km along the valley floor heading up river, we started up the
valley wall rising 800 m to a crest in the Andes, at which we passed into
Argentina, and then wound down the other side. At the bottom of the hill we
hit the Argentina border post and jumped on a ferry and headed off across
the lake. Certainly it has been a while since I walked across a border with
nothing there, and the route had us on a dirt road, I do not think this is a
major pass. You can see photos of the border and the road.
We spent the rest of the afternoon travelling by ferry through mountain
lakes snow and forrest rising on each side until we reached Bariloche,
tomorrow we start exploring, but we stopping here for 8 days to rest and
explore.
Photos from the 2 days doing the crossing across from Chile to Argentina.
