After a restless night due to altitude effects we all were restless and Sean
felt quite sick, but we got to pharmacy and after an hour he was up and
away. We visited a new festival market which the boys became a main
attraction with their blond hair, (see photos), they got a guinea pig stuff
fluffy toy, and we picked up a bright wall hanging.
Then we started our Inka discovery, initially at the Inka Museum which was
very well done, and the boys loved the models and the live weavers in the
courtyard, but it gave us an opportunity to put this civilization in context
relative to time, and early civilizations here. Later in the day we went up
the hills over looking Cusco to review a Inka Ruin, it was interesting as we
compared with Egypt, and you will see in the photos the stones are big but
they well put together, not symmetrical, and curved against each other.
Initially I thought yes it would make it stronger as you can deal with
forces in all directions, but then asking it became clear why, this is still
in the Earthquake area and they have designed the stones to interlock, and
be able to support each other (see photo), very interesting, where as Egypt
is much more symmetrical. A thing that is important to note that the Inkas
existed in 1500 and it was 1532 when the Spanish came in and knocked it all
down and then built their Spanish Cusco on top of the Inka rock foundations
you see this in many of the buildings.
During the afternoons the boys sleep so I usually go wandering at the moment
to find a place to watch the soccer, and today with Chile and Spain playing
I was on the lookout. Found "Paddy's Bar the highest Irish pub in the world
(at over 11000 feet, 3300 m), I have been in so many Irish pubs all over the
world I may as well watch the soccer in the highest one. So with my pint of
Guinness, I settled in with a Brazilian on one side, and swiss on the other
(they were playing as well) , we had two matches to watch, the place was
full and had plenty of character, as it is in a Spanish colonial building
just back from the main square.
It was fun to be in amongst the backpackers again, and just watching soccer
and enjoying a beer, the simple things in life. Dinner was on the square
watching the full moon rise over the square and churches, so bright and
white at this high altitude (See photos).
Stay tuned.
