Today we left at 7.30am pulling up the anchor, heading to Punta Abreojos
(26:43.986N 113:32.653W).Lifting the anchor in the most clear water I have
seen in a long time, I would see 25 feet down to see the anchor on the
bottom, and how well this Rocna anchor digs in (this is a new generation
anchor from New Zealand). The wind did as predicted came off the land for
the first 2 hours at about 15 to 17 knots which allowed us a 90 degree reach
across the Asuncion bay, covering the first couple of ours under sail before
it clocked around to nothing (it is expected out of the NW in the
afternoon), interesting we had 5 foot nice following swells until about 1/2
ago when a southerly swell appeared to make the ride less comfortable but
Gijima just rides it well. As every morning on Cruising Gijima, we had hot
showers, this morning I used the show also to get some washing down and then
laid it on the foredeck to dry in the warm sun. Steve produced pancakes this
morning and now we are settling back into a 4 hour run reading and studying
Spanish (with Ed's guidance) as expected the fishing lines our out in the
hope of more fish today. As we rounded the big reefs(great surfing spots
about 4 miles off shore, this is not a place to come in at night ED kept
explaining), we caught 3 yellow tail medium size, we are experimenting with
the cuts, so we filleted one, steak cuts one, and just kept one whole which
we just baked on the barbeque for dinner, we continue to build up dinners in
the freezer while feeding ourselves. We dropped anchored 600 feet from the
shore in 15 feet of water, with an amazing rock break surf just next door to
watch (very tempting to get the boogey board out). After much effort we go
hold of shore via VHF to find out that no whales have arrived at the lagoon
San Ignacia this year for calving, we had hoped to pick up panga to go in
here but looks like this will be a miss, and tomorrow we will go for another
day sail 50 miles on to San Jaunico. These day sails give us a chance to
explore this coast while not stressing the trip as we leave at 7.30 am
(approx) and arrive 2 to 3 pm in the afternoon, we get a full night sleep,
why push it when you don't have too. We have only really seen one other sail
boat heading south she is from Dana Point "two Amigos" and left a couple a
days before us. Dinner tonight was baked yellow tail, with asparagus and
margaritas, looking at the sun set, not bad.
Stay tuned.
