It was lucky we hired the car yesterday to see the mountains, as today the
clouds are back. The one thing they say about the Patagonia is that the
weather changes quickly and you can have the 4 seasons in one day, so we
were happy. Today we got a transfer bus to cover the 250km south to Punta
Arenas situated on the Straits of Magellan we arrived late afternoon, this
is the most southerly point we go on this trip and it is the most southerly
I have ever been (I expect I will only pass this when we do Antartica one
year in the future).
The trip down was through a brown tundra landscape of cattle / sheep farms,
often reminding me of the shepp farms around Canberra/ cooma in Australia.
It is cold, brown landscape, dotted with the odd farm houses that are wood
and bright colors. We arrived in Punta Arenas after following the channel
for 50 km into a town/ city that has a huge amount of history and nice
traditional buildings.
We are staying in a hotel off the main plaza, that is a converted mansion
into a hotel, with very high cealings and big stair ways, I think we are the
only people in the hotel, next to a church so we get the hourly bells
directly into the room, so it will be interesting to sleep.
We have 3 days here were we will explore the area and then starting working
our way north.
