Riding the Gulf Stream: last 24h sailed distance 192 NM !
Yesterday for lunch we had our mahi catch of the day served with rice and white wine from Orvieto.
It was sunny and warm and the boat was moving with a good breeze. One of the best lunch ever and the mahi was very very good.
Last night around 8pm we encountered the edge of the cold eddy that we were trying to avoid. The wave assumed the characteristic sharp shape
of wind against current and our speed over ground was about 2 kts lower than speed over water.
It took us about two hours to past the unfavorable eddy current. At night we had to reef the main to the 2nd reef as the wind build to about 25kts.
Unfortunately our windspeed sensor stopped working and so we don't have a precise reading.
Around 4am we entered the Gulf stream and the SOG shoot up to 11-12 kts about 4 kts above hull speed.
Since we started to surf down the waves we reefed down to the third reef and we have been comfortably riding the gulf stream for the last
8 hours. It seems that luck was also on our side since we missed a large front of thunderstorms and rain going east just north of us.
Wind forecast are for a distinguishing wind and the wind clocking from north west to north and then east.
We will try to ride the gulf as long as possible and then tack to follow the rhumb line for New York.
