We are at Sultanhani, on the ancient Caravan trail. The Caravanserai
(Kervanserai) here is the best preserved, built by the Seljuks in the
1200’s. A Kervanserai is a hotel – palace really – for people and
camels. They were placed at about 15 mile intervals along the route of the
silk road through Anatolia, to facilitate trade. This one is on the road
between Konya and Aksaray. We are staying at a lovely pensiyon with a
beautiful camp ground at the back with lawn and roses (quite unusual in
Turkey!). The owner invited us to join him at their table for “pastis and
frank discussion” – but he was actually too sozzled for any of the latter and
kept calling me darling. |
