We had a really short 230 km drive today and have arrived on the coast at
Esperance. Twilight Beach is wonderful. The sea is really
turquoise.. The camp site has grass, yippee! We are
wearing our fly hats and feeling quite comfortable (but we have a lot further
north to go!!!). We are camped next to Pink Lake, another of those lakes
that’s pink! We found out today, it is due to an alga that is highly salt
tolerant, and which makes beta carotene, the stuff in carrots, and they harvest
the algae to get the carotene for food colouring. There is also a
bacterium in there that makes pink stuff but I forget what.
We met a lovely couple, Rebecca and Ryan, who are on a 20 month cycling
trip from UK. They went the way we didn’t, ie around the bottom end of the
Caspian Sea, through Turkmenistan then on through the other Stans and China,
etc. We shall enjoy reading their
blog. |
