Sitting in this German town outside a pub called the German Arms (is that the Wehrmacht?), I visited this town when I  came to Adelaide with Jenny, but this time it is HOT!  Very posh campsite, we are the only tent!

We had a really nice 2 nights in Port Fairy and got ourselves caught up, camp cooked, and walked the beautifully wild and unspoilt Griffiths Island, home to a huge colony of burrow-nesting muttonbirds (shearwaters ) who were all out at sea, but we saw their burrows, plus a swamp wallaby.  This area is volcanic, and we walked up Tower Hill, an extinct volcano with a flooded caldera and smaller cones inside, like Bromo in java.

Next stop  was a bush camp in the Lower Glenelg National Park, VERY COLD NIGHT, thank goodness for our duvets.  The place was deserted except for the blue wrens and tree creepers and an empty tent close by.  I met 2 fox cubs who stared at me, gambolled around, stared some more, then shot off into the bracken.  Later the tent occupants returned, one of them strolled over and invited us in a broad Derby accent to share their campfire.  They were Alan and Paul, 2 truck drivers on a fishing holiday.  Alan was also an astronomer, very knowledgeable, and we got to look through his binocular telescope and saw Jupiter’s moons.  He was an amazing teacher and we learned a load of astronomy that night.  I now know where to look for Jupiter, Mercury and Venus in the night sky.  Next stop Hahndorf.
