I thought this was interesting. Thereâs a couple of pictures on the last
blog of the Potemkin Staircase, but I donât think my writing was legible.
A movie was made in 1925 about a mutiny on the Battleship Potemkin, due to
meagre maggot-ridden rations & terrible conditions. The people of
Odessa ran to the steps in support of the sailors. A massacre by tsarist
troops follows. The steps run red with blood, and a runaway pram with baby
inside bounces down to the bottom.
The film was considered too provocative at the time & wasnât shown in
Europe till the 1950âs. The pram scene has been borrowed many times,
including in the 1987 Untouchables movie!
