Cape Range National Park

 

Great excitement!  Marine turtles nest in this area.  At this time of year they come on to the beaches in the evening to dig a nest and lay their eggs.  We watched them cruising up and down with their heads out of the water and crawling up the beach.  They are really big, about a metre in length, and it was a real thrill to see them.

 

We were sitting on the deserted beach turtle watching, and having a beer, when a young chap (Vinny) appeared, he’d seen our car at the head of the track and come to find us.  He was pretty unlucky, his car was bogged in sand and he had left his girlfriend waiting in the failing light,  half a mile back up the track, so he was looking for a tow.  We had already got bogged and got ourselves out, so were not game to go in again to pull them out.  So instead we gave them a lift back to their campsite, sitting on our tailgate.  Vinny told us he had hit a kangaroo which bounced across his bonnet, on the way to the beach.  He had only come to do a bit of fishing.  He said he’d been on a 3 month fishing trip and caught nothing!  An hour after we got home, he turned up again at our tent, having got pulled out of the sand, this time he’d left his girlfriend’s purse in the back of our car, AND he hit another kangaroo on the way there.  I don’t hold out much hope for the kangaroo population in that area while Vinny is around.
