Ruby's Oil Down......

We were invited to an 'oil down' .... what is an oil down ? well a few local people get together and everyone helps to chop breadfruit , plantains , chicken peices , coconut tumeric and it is all layered into a huge pot which is placed over an open fire and left to simmer for an hour , in the meantime talk ( or 'lime' as it is called here) and drink plenty of rum and then you have yourself an 'oil down', lots of other yachties went as well and took either a dessert or appetiser to share with others , it really was a very pleasant afternoon , Ruby outside whos house this oil down took place sat and serveyed the scene and enjoyed tasting all the nibbles that were being passed around, she loved my hot spicy samosas and my fried chillis but when I offered her some peanuts she shrieked with laughter and declared ' i dun havno teef honey' , when the oil down was served it was hot tasty and very filling with big dumplings on the top, mmmn. It was great to mingle and talk with the people who live there , Ruby has 7 children and 15 granchildren of who she is very proud , lingdon who announced he was 50 and really didn't look like it who was very proud of Grenada and we talked a bit about politics and put the world to rights before he went off to party the night away , Hilary who became my new best friend and shared a bottle of white wine with me while still manageing to work beihind the bar and give me all the information on the carnival and Benidict a huge young man , very gentle just happy to stand with us and drink his rum, truly a lovely afternoon.
