We have had a wonderfull weekend here in La Gomera with the Fiesta , On Sunday we took a stroll around the Marina and through a tunnel to a cafe and the beach on the other side , the cafe was closed but they were erecting a huge amount of sound and lighting systems and also a guy was placing massive amounts of fireworks about the place ,we had our coffee by the Marina and wished we knew was the events for the day were but we havnt really been able to work this out and we hav,nt been able to find a programme .

We had early evening drinks on board 'island life' with Cormack a lovely irishman who sails alone and who we met in Madeira . we had a pleasant evening with him and he gave us lots of usefull information about how to boost our reception for the internet , we went back to the boat for supper and were going to stay put but there were hundreds of poeple streamimg towards this tunnel so we thought we had better go and join in .

Well what a spectacle , the whole cliffside was lit up with lights and lasers , lit up and floating majesticaly just off the point was a full size Galleon , 3 small rowing boats with a full size spotlight were rowing ashore and there was a whole dance troupe dancing on the sand , they performed a re-inactment of Columbus collecting or bringing ( we are not quite sure!) the Maddona to the new world , it was full of actors , drama , great lighting effects and pyrotechnics , truly a great night . Only down side was we went to bed really tired and by 4 am couldn,t sleep because of the music from the square so we did the only sensible thing we could think of ,we got dressed and went dancing until 6-30 am ,Viva La Salsa!!! came back had breakfast and went to bed !!!!!

Monday we gathered was THE day , everyone in a high state of excitement and this was the day the Madonna was collected by sea and processed throught the town, all morning everyone decorated their boats , we put up our 'dressing overall' ( flags) and some bunting around the boat as it is important, we feel ,to take part in these things if we can , by 4 pm the whole Marina started to be on the move , we stayed put as we didn,t want to be part of this large movement in case of bumps and grinds( we had seen how much beer , wine and rum had already been drunk) , it took about an hour for all the boats to leave, all beautifully decorated , but each boat was very heavily laden with bottles of rum and wine ( glad we stayed put) the whole town waited patiently along the beach for the return of the Maddona and what a site! , all the horns blowing , we have now found out that this takes place every 5 years , all the tv crews were on hand and radio, The Madonna was safely transported on a stand to the beach and processed with great ceromony to the church, we caught up with the Madonna later in the evening and she is only about 10 inches high. There was a symphoney orchestra in the eveningand because of no programme of events we did,t know where to but the tickets ,  but we are getting really tired so we watched a bit of a dvd and went to bed   .
