We enjoyed a leisurely sail to Klaipeda, Lithuania, after our customary 0630 start. Ghosting down Liepaja's river under main alone in a light easterly, we felt we were stealing away while the world around us slept. Once outside the harbour, we were close hauled on port tack as we commenced the 55 mile passage south. The sun was shining, the sea was flat, and breakfast was coming. Marvellous!
After a two hour calm patch, the wind filled in from the NW, so the asymmetric got an airing. By 1700 we were passing through the moles at the entrance to Klaipeda's port, and after a short wait for a swing bridge, we were soon snug in a lovely berth in the city centre.
Tomorrow morning at 0415 we say goodbye to Sam and Ken. It has been wonderful to have them both aboard: there was nothing they didn't willingly turn their hands to, and they were both outstanding ship mates. Sam became a most competent helmsman and sail trimmer, while Ken could always be relied to hold a safe watch - and constantly dazzled us with his culinary skills in the gallery. Aquila will miss them both.
