ILES CIES AND BACK TO VIGO FOR CREW CHANGE

Saturday: as promised by GRIB, we awoke to a gentle SE1, putting us on a lee shore; but after breakfast and once under way, it dropped to a glassy calm (phot). By 1200 a zephyr appeared from the SW, allowing us to ghost towards our next anchorage Playa das Figuieres, off Ilas Cies. Here, despite it being a fine weekend and many day visitors ashore, we had the anchorage to ourselves (phot) – how different from the south coast at home. Some swam – hot it was not (phot); all walked to the NE light house, which turned out to be unimpressive (phot). Guess how we dined…again!

Sunday: due to yesterday’s disappointing light house, we resolved to walk before breakfast to the more substantial light on the SW tip of Ilas Cies. Years back, some had worked very hard to build this place (phots); but it seems what they forgot is that low cloud has a debilitating effect on such lights (phot). While Nicky throttled back due to her iffy ankle, the remainder of the crew summited (phots). The view down from the top (phot) invited vertigo, but horizontally it was not so impressive – shame (phot). On the return downhill trip we enjoyed the fauna (phots) and even some newly hatched Herring gull chicks (phots). And the sun reappeared….

And so to Vigo this afternoon in preparation for tomorrow’s crew change: Sarah, Nicky and Hugh set off at 0900, and Tim Ashdown, Chris Dragonetti and Mike West arrive at 1200. In the available time, the skipper needs to turn to! It has been such fun having Nicky and Hugh – and the skipper is relieved that the weather they enjoyed this year bore no resemblance to that they experienced last time they came! Sarah returns home for 10 days, before rejoining somewhere between Vigo and A Coruna.
