Tuesday 8 July. Yesterday, after a night of total tranquillity at a buoy in La Vilaine, we enjoyed a magical early hour chug down to the barrage at Arzal. ‘Arctic sea smoke’ was much in evidence (phots). The lock this time was far less of a bun fight than coming up – maybe it had something to do with the time of day! Once back in salt water, the calm continued as we enjoyed breakfast underway (phot) – indeed, we had to motor almost the entire way to Piriac-sur-Mer.

Plan A had been to spend 24 hours at Piriac, but with Sarah leaving tomorrow and having now ascertained that Judy is definitely joining on 12th (wonderful!), we decided Aquila would stay here until then to facilitate logistics. There are many worse places to spend a brief interregnum - Piriac really is the most charming village – see photos x 2 (entries to the ‘spot the difference’ competition are welcome!).

Today we took a bus to visit the medieval walled city of Guérande – lots of nooks and alleys (phots), and a seemingly local speciality of piggy banks(phot)!

Next blog will probably not be until 13 or 14 July, hopefully from somewhere around Belle Isle. In the meantime, the skipper aims to work through the boat’s everlasting ‘to do’ list…..
