Sunday 8 June. Aah..a day of rest and relaxation in glorious sunshine…and a quick turn round the jawdropping Marche…more Harrods Food Hall than town market…..until the inevitable decision was made to hire les velos for a spin along the cycle tracks which run all round this island. A cracking pace was set by Bill, and the Aquila peloton streamed out towards the lighthouse past miles of oyster beds and salt pans (phot). The Skipper had to be encouraged to ignore the tempting oyster degustation shacks along the way….Mrs Skipper having expressed concern at the number of said delicacies consumed to date already!

Fifteen sporting kilometres later a lovely watering hole was reached for brief refreshment (phot) before a further sprint to the beach for a bathe and a bite. The skipper and Bill did a fine impression of Neptune in the seaweed filled surf, while the more cautious crew dipped a toe or two.

The homeward run saw the peleton weave its way past what seemed like the entire population of the Isle de Re who were also enjoying the opportunity to train for the Tour de France. The highlight of the trip was the discovery of a North Cardinal buoy clearly marked ‘SUD’, in the middle of a roundabout…..hence the doubt about the correct direction of travel (see Phot)!
Home port was regained however and a sense of achievement after 30k of fun on two wheels. At least two crew members were soon lightly snoring after their energetic day! No guilt was felt at all during a splendid supper at a great little restaurant recommended by Tony Walton (Wiggy’s oppo from ILLUSTRIOUS), who also joined us for a highly entertaining evening.
