June 17 Istanbul

We spend Sunday afternoon wandering around new areas . We walked across Galata Bridge amidst several hundred fishermen which is strange to see in the middle of a busy city. They fish with multiple hooks sometimes with  no bait and sometimes with tiny feathers on the hooks.  Mostly they get something like a small sardine.  It is a very busy Bridge.  The fishermen are on the top layer with lots of traffic, trams and trucks… and a lower level has dozens of mostly fish restaurants.  After the bridge we find “The Tunnel” which is like an underground cable tram which takes us up to higher ground.  Next we take  a tiny one car Tram over a kilometre to the Istanbul equivalent of Piccadilly Circus.  It is Sunday afternoon and we are not alone.  The Pedestrian Walkway is several  Ks long and choc a block with all the major international stores and thousands of people.  I feel mildly  agoraphobic. We slowly work our way back down to the bridge and catch the 5:30 bus back to the marina.  You began to realize just how big and sprawling this city is.  It would take many weeks to see it all. We will have to settle for a taste.
