Oct 14th On Route to Gib

I just discovered this entry was lost when some new HP Camera software
for Sotiris was installed and the computer locked up. In Cartagena we
managed to
find the only town in the entire Costa Del Sol which is not overrun with
the English. Consequently we missed the England Football match but
managed to find an Irish pub in the evening which did show the Rugby which
we thoroughly enjoyed. Steve and Sotiris sorted the pole slider—see
men at work.

We used the new Spinnaker for the first time in anger and flew along at
10-11 knots for several hours in a Force 5. When it piped up to nearly 25
knots we took it down which was a real challenge. Its an absolutely
amazing sail. We flew it without the pole (manufacturer’s
recommendation) and discovered it worked even better w
ith the main sail.

Andrew insisted on fishing even though we told him we were going too fast.
See “Man at Work” drilling out a lead weight in the vain hope
the lure would sink beneath the waves. Needless to say we lost the lure
when the wire trace broke from metal fatigue

Oct 15th. Gib
Arrived Gib early afternoon and took on a 1000litres of duty free diesel.

Outside the harbour entrance we saw a wreck (see Whoops) Its been there
for a couple of months. Apparently the Captain decided to up anchor
without telling the harbour traffic control and was T-Boned by a bigger
ship which managed to limp to a port. The Captain is currently in jail.

The first 24 hours of this leg was 196.4 miles. So we’ve been
averagoing nearly 200 miles /day for this leg.

The weather is grey and showery. Gib covered in black cloud. As Andrew
couldn’t fish he made another fruit pie which we haven’t
tried yet.

While taking on Fuel, we spotted Fuerte across the water. This is an early
Oyster 55 and Richard and Petra are taking two years off to sail the Med
and the Caribbean with their three children before returning to realty.
The kids study on board and seem to be having a great time. We first met
them in late August in Mezapo on the middle finger of the Peloponnisos
and ate together at the one very simple taverna there. We saw them again
in Pilos where we checked out from Greece. They were on the way to
Syracuse Italy and we were heading back to Antibes. They have as
WebSite:www.yachtfuerte.com and may be joining the Mailasail blog. They
will be crossing with The ARC(Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) in late
November when we will be long gone from Gran Canaria. I think they go back
to Morocco tomorrow. Unfortunately we have to be in Gran Canaria by the
22nd as Andrew has to fly back for an Audition with ENO and Glyndebourne
on the 23rd Yet again we’re always on a delivery!.

As I have managed to make a wi/fi connection in the marina I’m
trying to send a few more picture than would normally be possible. I
think it will take several goes.
