South to Grenada
12:02.63N 61:4.94W 7 Feb 2012 After a relaxing day in Bequia we headed south at dawn. A few interactions with the locals like getting better download of the pictures taken by the local photo man were done. Kenmore of Bequia Photo Action was very responsive and handle the little issue we had. Even at 06:30 he came over to the boat to exchange memory sticks to make sure we had all the photos we asked to be provided on a CD. We headed south toward Grenada at first under motor. Getting south of Bequia we got some wind, not great but workable. The non-battened main was partially out and most of the genoa. However, the swells were greater that the wind and made it tough to do much with the sails as they flapped with each roll of the boat. So we decided (actually I chose) to sail for an hour in slow rolly seas then change back to motoring to make distance. After a few hours we again sailed at 5-6 knots but the swells knocking the wind out of the sails. Seas were 2-3 meters at maximum between the islands. More than the winds could handle. On the way we passed an active underwater volcano. New island being formed for the last 10 years. No pumice on the water however like the Aeolian Islands near Sicily. So we continued south with rough and choppy seas till we got behinds Grenada. Into the harbor at St Georges (Port St Louis) to the Campers and Nicholson marina. New marina with floating docks, fixed docks and Med moorings. Good staff to help berth. Customs and Immigration is right behind the marina office making it very easy. We set up a few appointment with local workers like riggers and electronic folks, to look and hopefully fix some of the issue we have (bad furling mainsail). Our plans are to spend a week or so in Grenada then head north. There is plenty to see on the island and we want to make as many trips as we can. Otherwise it is normal maintenance items for us. Replace the watermaker filter, find the cause of the watermaker Fuse 4 tripping, pumping out the stern black water holding tank and clearing the clog, normal boat work but not pleasant. Now on a search to find a 5 amp OTN auto type fuse for the watermaker, not common and apparently very rare on this island. More to come once we actually visit the island. Oh the trip was 68 NM and took 10 hours. |
