Corfu has a long history of being held by various empires.  Since it is strategically located along the trade routes it was something to possess.  As a result the town has had many different styles of buildings.  One of the prominent features is the Old Fortress looking out over toward present day Albania. Built during the Byzantine period and enlarged later.  Corfu (Koryfo meaning Summit) was annexed by the Venetians in the 14th century.  In the 16th century the moat around the fortress was completed.

In 1537 the fortress held out against the Ottoman Turks, who tried again in 1571, 1573 and 1716.  Later Corfu became an English Protectorate and the fort was enhanced further.  Most of the Venetian buildings were removed by the British and replaced.  The town was further damaged during WWII.

Today the town is Greek with a very heavy British flavor.  Everywhere there are British tourist or retirees.  Air travel between the UK and Corfu is very easy, having direct flights.
