Next to N Kos
36:53.53N 27:18.15E Up at dawn for the long trip to the island of Kos on the
eastern Aegean. With the past two days pounding I estimated it would be a 9
hour trip in rolly seas. Raising the anchor gave confirmation of the good set
in nice sticky mud. Again we crept out of the inlet, this time we recorded 17
feet (4.5 meters) depth, still more than the charts. Heading out and north of
the island the waves and rolls started but this time we would be on a course to
have them astern. Much easier ride if a bit being pushed around at times.
Again no real wind so motoring. The good part was the sun was out and the
waves slowly decreased along the way. We were able to make much faster time
since the seas were calmer. Approaching Kos there are islands to the north that helped
further reduce the waves. Two hours ahead of schedule we arrived at the
marina. This is one of the few true marinas in Greece and it is pretty nice. They
came out in a dingy and advise on fender heights and that we would be side to
instead of the normal Med moor. The marina is a tight place with many charter
boats. We entered backwards to avoid the need to turn around in tight
confines. No issue and we were berthed nicely. Side to means the fenders are
up against concrete. I have now 5 smaller expendable fenders to take the
abuse. The sea wall is low so we have a view of the water and the
old town is within view. The marina is well equipped with a café, chandlers,
laundry, showers, mini market and a internet/library room with a book
exchange. Met a British live aboard couple and got the lay of the land. Also
we now have electricity all the time without the generator running. It’s
the little things that become exciting sometimes. Actually this is the Police building as seen from the
entrance to the marina. They utilize the old buildings, no waste. Old castle that protected the town harbor. Again as seen
when we entered the marina. |
