Paros next stop
37:07.43N 25:13.31E Time to leave Mykonos. Winds were supposed to be okay
in the morning and building later in the day. Now almost every weather
forecast I use is at best unreliable and at worse dangerous. That is the
problem with this part of the world, very difficult to make accurate
predictions even with all the computer models and other electronic marvels. We left at 09:00 in calm winds as predicted. Headed
between the islands of Mykonos and Delos when the thunderstorms began to appear
on the horizon and radar. The weather did project thunderstorms so no
problem. As we got south of the island we stowed all the stuff that could
blow away or get wet. For about 45 minutes good lightning and thunder
with some winds (25 knots) but not bad. Once the squall cleared the winds
were steady and we again set sails. Very nice sailing, close reach with
15-20 knots apparent. Waves were small since the storm was quick
lived. Boat did well at 8-9 knots with full headsail and main.
Moved the traveler to leeward and sat back. Faster than by motoring.. In an hour we arrived at the harbor on the north end of
Paros. This is a very large natural harbor with coves that provide
protection from most winds. Since the winds were going to continue from
the south we went to the southern end and set anchor in 7 meters of water with
35 meters chain. The bottom is hard sand with no weed in the area we
dropped. I swam down on the anchor since I did not like the set.
Gave it a shove into the sand, came up and asked Pat to back up on the
anchor. She did and it dug in as required. Still able to dive down
7 meters (24 feet) and not come up gasping for air. Great night of sleep with the cool breeze and very calm
anchorage. This was much calmer than Mikonos with all the local boats
churning by without regard. Just ideal for a stop so we will spend two nights.
Plan to head into town tomorrow, right now time to enjoy the sun, warmth and
calm waters. View of rental units on shore from the boat. Town of Naousa in Ay Artemoios bay. Same place a few hours later. The thunder clouds build
over the islands with the daytime heat and fade at night. It is always
easy to find land when a cloud provide direction. |
