In the late morning we packed up an set out for Lefkas.  This is a trip of about 35 nautical miles and has a canal that cuts the distance down to the east side.  Our plan was to go through the canal and stop at the marina for two days.  But as we talked some more the thought of navigating a shallow narrow canal and waiting for a bridge to open was not favorable.  Further the marina was on the shallow side and we did not want to get stuck again.  So we chose the long way around the island.

The prior night had some strong winds offshore making the passage very rolly as we were beam to the waves.  As we reached the southern point of the island the depth went from 250 meters to 10 meters almost instantly.  Again as we rounded the point the depth again dropped.  These waters are poorly charted so it is not unusual to have incorrect reading but 200 meters off is too much.  Then seeing a flock of birds feeding on fish at the surface we suspect that the shallow sounding we in fact a school of fish just below the surface.

Anyway rounding the point brought strong winds as can happen.  Winds were 25 knots for about one half hour till we got further around.  I thought of putting up the sails since we had no winds on the way down it would be a welcome change.  But the day was getting short and the winds just local so we continued on motoring.

We chose a protected anchorage called Ormos Vlikho just south of the town Nidri.  This is effectively a saltwater lake with just a narrow entrance.  Once inside there is room for over 100 boats in waters less than 8 meters depth.  A few tavernas on shore in the southern end and the town of Nidri north across from Tranquil Bay (anything but tranquil now adays).  Good place to have stopped except for the barking dog all night and day.

Being almost totally enclosed the water is eutrophic (green) and not a place I would swim.
