Another motoring trip over to Otok Vis.  The town of Vis on the island according to the Pilot Guide books is a quiet non-tourist town that only recently became open to tourism as it was still occupied by the military until 1989.    Tito and his partisans were based here for part of WWII.  Well the guides are dated.  This town is pure tourist and jammed with charter boats.  Not any worse than other places but not quiet.  Outside the town this may be different since there are very few hotels or residents.

In fact Otok Vis is now on the route for the Scandinavian Yacht Week party flotilla.  About 40 charter sailboats with young Scandinavians descended on the place.  Most were very polite and respectful.  But beer and more beer is consumed.  They travel between towns for a week and stay up till 3:00 and lie hung over the next day while the captain, hired by some boats, takes them to the next place.  The advantage of air conditioning is we can close up the boat and not hear the noise.

In the morning I watched the big partiers wake up from their sleep on the decks of the boats to the noise of delivery trucks at 7:00 AM.  A bit of revenge since the trucks were restocking cases and cases of beer in the stores along the waterfront.

Actually we had nice conversations with the boats on both sides of us.  Several were college students on summer break, a couple were merchant marine trainees on two week break and others were actually families.

The town itself is nice with plenty of restaurants, shops, grocery stores and a large harbor good for kayaking and swimming on the far side.  Docked at the town quay is calm until the harbor Zodiacs rush around berthing boats.  They cause larger wakes than the large ferries which come in very slow with no wake.  Overall a nice stop for a day or two but avoid Mondays and Yacht Week.

View from boat across harbor.  On the backside there is a swimming beach (stones) and a cove for kayaking or snorkeling.
