O Anemokambi to Itea
38:25.81N 22:25.33E In the morning the local fishermen retrieve their nets they
set overnight. The nets are about 1-1.5 meters in height, weighted on the
bottom with floats on top. They are designed to sit on the bottom and
catch fish swimming along. I watched one of the boats retrieve their net
starting about 300 meters away. They slowly worked their way right over
to us when it became apparent we had laid our anchor and chain over their
net. Now there is no way to know where these nets are located since the
only mark the start on finish. In this case the nets made a complete
zigzag course around the entire bay, probably over a kilometer of net. I think they expected that we were on top of their nets from
the beginning so they simply cut the net and marked that end with a buoy.
Off they went to the other end of the net and again worked their way back to
us. As I watched they pulled up the cut end of the net along with our
anchor. Not an issue since the winds were light and the chain rode was
enough to hold us while they untangled the anchor from the net. Once done
they dropped it and waved goodbye. Not an issue since I was on the
boat. If we were not the anchor was now in a new position that would have
us too close to land if the wind blew. Not sure if the anchor would have
reset on its own. So at 8:00 AM we decided to move to Itea where we had a spot
reserved. A short trip of 45 minutes. Berthing had the winds
pushing us off the quay but getting a spring line on first assured that I could
control the boat along with the bow thruster. Itea is the closest town to Delphi, the ancient Greek city
on the hillside. Itea has a marina, like many others, was started and
never completed. However the concrete quays are in place along with
bollards. Electrical and water outlet are present but not
connected. There is a deliver guy with a small truck for water and diesel
if needed. The marina is well protected and we decided to stay for four
days to allow us to visit Delphi and wait out some strong winds that should end
by Friday. Well protected from waves this is a good place to wait out
winds. In the town of Itea there are plenty of restaurants along the
waterfront. A good SPAR supermarket, several bakeries and one produce
market. Empty marina, not sure it is this empty in July and August
but there seems to be plenty of room. Waterfront cafes We keep running into Ocean Pearl, one of the ugliest charter
boats I know of. Built as a timeshare boat it rents for over 100,000 Euros
per week. It is based in Corfu I think. The entire arch over the
boat is stairs from the bow to stern. |
