Arrive at Palmizana near Hvar
43:09.7N 16:23.6E A 40 Nautical Mile trip to Palmizana with no wind so by
motor. We did make one brief attempt at sailing but no use. Heading out
through the Peljeski Kanal past the town of Korcula produced some wind but the
straight has heavy traffic with ferries, power boats and sailboats. Not worth
dodging everyone in order to sail. Once outside the straight the wind died.
Not much on the trip except started seeing more nude sailors. For some reason
people get stark naked on their sailboats. The marina at Palmizana is a summertime only facility that
at times fills up with charter boats for the night. It is located on a group
of small islands a couple of miles from the main island of Hvar. Seems to be
on the suggested stops for their one week tours. This make great fun watching
all the boats attempt berthing in a tightly congested marina. The staff are
very good, using sports whistles to get the attention of the boats entering.
Sounds like a basketball game for a few hours with all the whistles and some
personal fouls. There is not much at the marina, a small grocery store,
restaurant, café, showers, and laundry. A 10 minute walk across the island is
one of the more popular beaches with more restaurants and rocky beaches. In this marina a lot of people are taking a swim. Not used
to seeing that since in Italy it is illegal to swim in a marina. Here in
Croatia they do not care about it. The water is clear but I never trust the
e-coli factor, especially with all the boats, not all of which have holding
tanks. The marina is 2 miles from the old town of Hvar on the large
island. Water taxis are available for the trip, free is you use the marina
boat at 8:00, otherwise about 100 Kuna roundtrip (20 dollars). The marina is well protected except when the Northwest winds
blow a chop into the entrance which reflects directly into the marina making it
rolly. Otherwise its fine. Persevere berthed between two powerboats in the marina. Café and restaurant in marina. |
