On
our way to the Selvagem Islands right now - so named because of all the salvage
that goes on there!! They are surrounded by shoals and rocks, but
apparently worth going to to. We got our permit in Madeira the other
day, so hopefully we'll be able to land. Swell and tide
permitting of course. At the moment there is a large 4 metre swell
from the North, but not much wind now, only 3's. It was a bit lumpy
in the night, and I found myself looking up at some of the waves as they
threatened to 'poop' us. So we're rolling around this morning,
hoping to reach the islands by mid afternoon, having left Madeira yesterday
morning.
It
was a beautiful day for sailing yesterday. The sun was shining, the
winds were 5's and constant....until the shackle on the main sheet at the
boom end snapped with a resounding Bang! Luckily, I'm one of those freaks
who just can't go past a chandlers without buying a 'spare shackle', and we had
it replaced and were back on course in no time.
The
attached photos are of leaving Madeira, me trying to have my 'sundowners' (Force
6 in the glass and Force 4 on the water!), and of Anette cooking spag' bol' for
our supper.
