Sunday, 3rd July and a very early start 3.00am and into Van Diemen’s Gulf – not at all what we had expected!   The wind had been forecasted 15-20 knots and as the Gulf is protected on most sides we had expected a nice fast run in with relatively calm seas.  What we actually got was a short choppy uncomfortable sea and a wind blowing 25 knots, we started on a broad reach with both genoas out and rolled along.  The wind changed direction to the North East and we got the sails out on both sides for a short time and negotiated through the channel between the nasty reefs and sandbanks.  It seemed a very long day but finally we got a glimpse of Darwin and the genoas went back on the same side and we sailed right into Fannie Bay.  We arrived about 5.00pm very very glad to drop anchor and have a celebratory glass of wine and enjoy the lovely late sunset here (proof we had travelled a long way West!).
