14 miles out we discovered a broken joint in the headsail foil which allowed a sharp piece of metal to protrude and damage the sail.  We turned about and got back to Direction Island just as the light was fading at 1800.  We hope we can effect a repair tomorrow, including a patch on the genoa, and be away again by the middle of the day.  However, I write without the benefit of a close inspection and assessment of the damage.

As of now we remain optimistic.
