Yesterday was the day we really left the trade winds behind and encountered our first Atlantic front. It was a cold one, it lived up to its name and I was inclined to turn south and go back to the Caribbean!
Simon Rowell, my shore met man had warned of 35-40 kt winds as we went through the front, so we were all prepared for a nasty few hours. In reality it was only in the 20s as we seemed to happily stumble on a bit of a gap between two sets of towering cumulonimbus so we hit lucky.
But it was cold and wet , the foulies were donned and for the first time in ages the heat of the cooking stove was a welcome respite from the cold of the cockpit, rather than the other way round!
We keep sailing on today with 2 reefs in and Marie Antoinette the self steering system doing all the work. We are not going in quite the right direction but a wind shift later today will help.
