Chris and I got up unnecessarily early in order to avoid the midday heat while hiking up La Grande Soufriere, the highest peak on Guadeloupe and indeed of the Eastern Caribbean.
The early start was unnecessary on two counts- firstly because our taxi driver overslept and secondly because there was no midday heat. We just got wet instead in the persistent rain and even almost chilly in the strong wind on the top, not that we stayed up there in the clouds for very long! The trail was well engineered and more like a motorway compared to the peaks of Dominica and St Lucia, with crowds of people to match. I don’t think subsequent islands on the trip have much in the way of peaks , so hopefully I can stay a bit dryer.
Late afternoon we shifted anchorage further up the coast to a bay just north bay of Anse a la Barque, where the braai had its first outing of the trip, though sadly without a freshly caught fish on the menu.
