We left Bitter End (which turned out to be the most expensive parking space of the trip so far!) mid morning and headed north to the low lying island of Anegada. The underwater contours off the island are equally flat and we had less than 0.5 metres under the keel at times. As we were approaching the island we were debating whether the line of white shapes on the coastline was houses or surf on the reef, but it soon became apparent that it was a jam packed parking lot of yachts, mostly large catamarans.
Fortunately there were a few mooring buoys left and we took one astern of a yacht we had seen at Bitter End with a very impressive boat dog, a Tasmanian Labradoodle. We went ashore late afternoon for a short walk - I will save the ascent of the 11 metre highest point of the island for a possible return visit in the next couple of weeks with other crew.
The main (only?!) attraction of the island is lobster suppers, with several restaurants set up to feed the hordes of visiting yachts. We went to Anegada Reef Hotel, the longest established, which seems to be on a decline as the tables were pretty empty…..possibly as the barbecued lobster had a paraffin flavour ! Anyway, the setting was lovely and a good time was had by all.
