Since technology is less technological out here in
the South pacific, we are just adding blogs when we can. I shall give you
all our account and experience of Tahiti. It really was a great
experience, and as most things at the moment I wish I could go back and do it
all again. Sadly, that would not be practical.
We arrive in Tahiti to coincide with their Bastille
Day celebrations and festival called Neiva Nui. Lots of dancing, singing,
traditional shows. The outrigger canoe race was most amusing. We had
seen photos of this on the TV, and thought it was action right to the end.
Don't believe all you watch on the box....lots of boats, but so laid back and
about 30 minutes between each race as they paddled to the other end of the
island to start the race. We stationed ourselves at the finish line, so
saw the best bit. The start time was somewhat blurry, but asking the
locals, they seemed to think we needed to be in the town at 07.30. OK, I
think, we therefore need to catch the bus by 7am ish. So although we were
half hour leaving, we got to town by 8am. Nothing, not even a person
setting up. Oh, it starts at 12md, great! But in the meantime we get
to watch the military procession. So it starts at 12. WRONG!
It started at nearly 2pm!!!!! Oh well, island time. The kids were
starving, and we had to wait over an hour for the return bus. However, it
was great to see, and clearly still alive.
A few days later, they have Traditional
games. This means ancient Olympic games. This was by far the best
entertainment. Men dressed up in the traditional gear and taking it all so
very seriously. (see photos).
After catching up with some friends and doing the
chores, we then moved on to Moorea, so await the next mammoth lot of
photos.
