We sailed the river Guadiana which forms the border
of Spain and Portugal.20 miles up river there are 2 towns one on either side of
the river. Very quaint and pretty although you can see Spain is more affluent as
the quality of the houses restaurants etc were better.
What was really interesting was for the last 6
anchorages we have kept seeing a 84 ft motor boat that looks from the outside
like an exploration vessel however inside it looked really plush. In true Tim
style I went up to the boat, got us invited onboard and started cross
questioning the owner on the boat.Vic did an inside tour while I cross
questioned the male owner. After a while we had to go back for dinner so said we
would have a drink another time. They gave Vicki their card and only when we got
back to the boat did I read it and see that it was Steve and Linda Dashew. I
have read so many of his books on offshore sailing and boat design as he is one
of the worlds boating authorities. It's amazing who you meet while cruising.
Next time we see them I may not question all his thoughts on the boat
though.
Here is Julie Lauren with Karinya behind anchored
in the river
The towns are built on a slate hill, so land is at
a premium, this is the burial site
Both towns from the castle, what was interesting is
that each town had a church that rang the time. However Portugal is 1 hour
behind Spain so at mid day Portugal you hear 12 bells, shortly followed by the
Spanish church ringing 1
View of Portugal on the way up to the
castle.
Familiar sights
Cal walking over the entrance to the fort,
little run down as you can see
After the hike up we went to a hotel and if you had
some drinks you could use the pool. Vicki here is showing her Colgate smile
underwater
