Hi all
We are now in Carriacou which is part of Grenada although still in the
Grenadines. The bay in nicely protected from the strong winds we were
supposed to get although no evidence of them at the moment. Tyrell bay
is where Vicki and I came 8 years ago when we were bringing Tuaq back
from Trinidad. Little has changed (apart from prices) and the pizza
restaurant that we dingied to last visit is still there.
We met a Australian couple with a 5 year old daughter and as a result
have spent the last few days in their company so the kids can play.
They bought a large catamaran 3 weeks ago in Trinidad and are sailing
north so we won't have too much time together. As mentioned before you
meet so many different people while sailing and these 2 used to be
professional water skiers in an earlier life. They were on the circuit
for 15 years and obviously did very well from it.
Yesterday we took the dingy to another small island, had a picnic on
the beach and snorkeled. As with a lot of the Carib islands they are
eventually protecting their reefs and slowly the coral and fish life
is recovering from years of abuse. The Aussies have a huge dingy so
they carried the food and half my family while Cal and I went in our
dingy. It was about 5 miles offshore so we were flying through the air
with each wave we hit. On the way back Cal opted for the faster more
comfortable dink and Vic came with me for the flying experience.
On the beach we met a wealthy guy from Venezuela on his boat. There
has been a lot of security issues about sailing the Venezuelan islands
and he confirmed that when we leave Trinidad we should be at least 50
miles offshore from the islands as piracy is rife in that area. It is
such a pity as they are beautiful islands.
We still need to plan the route west, but it looks like after Carnival
that we will head North almost as far as Grenada before we head west
for the Dutch antilles. This will give us a wide berth of V and
hopefully avoid any issues.
We will probably spend another day or 2 here and then head for
Grenada. We need to bring the boat out of the water soon as she has
grown a green beard and desperately needs her bottom anti fouled. We
may now do this in Grenada if the facilities are good.
That's all our news
