Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the Austrian architect and artist lived for 25 years, until his death, in the Bay of Islands.

He had sailed his boat “Regentag” from Europe to New Zealand (Opua) and bought an old farm house near Kawakawa.

He loved the unspoiled nature and kindness of the local people and was commissioned by the Local Council to design the public toilets of Kawakawa. His work and philosophy has influenced the town until today!
