"Island of Salt", Porto da Palmeira
We tried to sail as slow as possible and at 05.00 UTC had to hove to outside the bay, as it was still dark. We had breakfast: Paul's special scrambled eggs with baked beans on toast and listened to the local radio, which played  superb music, very up; a mixture of African, South American and Portuguese music.
As dawn shed the first light we packed all sails away and motored gently into the harbour with lots of yachts at anchor. After motoring around to find a suitable space, a young woman waved to us from their yacht, her baby wrapped onto her back. She warned us that her husband was diving under their boat and told us where to anchor, as some pipe-lying work was scheduled and people were asked to move. Just when our anchor was set the morning activity started. Lots of yachts had to re-anchor in a very confined space and a local fishing vessel is lying a new pipeline on our starboard side, just as we are writing.
"Jazz", a French yacht welcomed us, we saw each other in La Gomera and they had just arrived last night. Then we spoke to Kirstin, a young South African single handed sailor, delivering a yacht to South Africa via Brazil...(Brave woman!) She had been here for a week and gave us all the important things to know about the place, being very enthusiastic about the kindness and laid back attitude of the locals. We are now preparing to go ashore, clear customs and see the village for ourselves.
It is very, very hot!
