Bay of Virgins
Originally the early explorers named this bay: "Bay des
Verges (Bay of Phalli) because of the shape of the rocky pillars, but the
missionaries disapproved and inserted an "i" changing it to "Vierges"
(Virgins).
In old Marquesan the Bay and village are called Hanavave
meaning "strong surf bay"
Fatu Hiva is the most Southern of the Marquesan and
with no airstrip the most remote and unspoiled island.
The majestic rock formations are spectacular and
awe-inspiring.
We are glad we made the effort yesterday to sail the
windward passage down here.
On arrival we found five other yachts anchored in the
best holding area, which resulted in us making six attempts to anchor in
different spots. Ironically, this morning
3 yachts left in the early hours, leaving the center of the bay free.
But we are happy where we are now and glad we are well dug
in.
