8 Jun – Clearing in to America
The dinghy is still unusable so we had to go to Riviera Beach Marina to get ashore and clear customs and immigration. They put us on the superyacht dock and charged $15 for the afternoon. About $250 less than a superyacht!
With our limited access to the land we went to clear customs
and immigration, had a shower, did some laundry, filled up with water and then
dashed to the shops. You can’t take fresh produce to the Bahamas or bring any
back to the US so the last 2 weeks we have had no fruit - tried some Bahama
bananas once but they were still unripe when we left so we had to give them to
the Gulf Stream. Very happy with the fruit bowl on our return!
The short trip back to our anchorage in Lake Worth after
pretending to be a superyacht went passed Peanut Island Park. The 79 acre
island was created in 1918 from the dredging spoils when creating the inlet and
Port of Palm Beach. It was given its name when an unsuccessful peanut-oil
shipping operation started there in 1946. In 2005 it benefited from a $13
million renovation and is now a recreational park with camping, beaches, a pier
and a blast shelter. The shelter was built in secret for President Kennedy just
after his 1960 election as he often visited Palm Beach during the winters!
The shores of Lake Worth are still providing winter homes
for the wealthy – most of these houses are closed up for the summer.
